Copper – The Sustainable Choice for Cooling

Copper – The Sustainable Choice for Cooling

As a country, India is facing rising temperatures and heat waves during summer. Cooling thus becomes a necessity. It is also an indicator of development and impacts the environment heavily. But this impact can be arrested with increased adoption of green technologies and recyclable natural resources.

India is emerging as the fastest-growing cooling market globally.

Cooling action plan for India

As the demand for cooling surges, we see a sharp rise in energy requirements and greenhouse gas emissions. To combat this and be able to achieve the target of being a carbon-neutral nation by 2070, we need an action plan that lets us adopt climate-friendly as well as eco-efficient technologies today.

The government has devised the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) that offers a perspective for 2 decades. It assesses future cooling requirements across sectors and comes up with newer technologies that can handle the load with sustainable standards.

Choosing copper over other metals helps ICAP not only achieve other goals but also is a sustainable choice that is compatible with the R32 refrigerant.

The cooling industry can become more sustainable and energy efficient by simply adopting green refrigerants and can bring about a technological revolution in AC components to make them compatible with green refrigerants.

What else makes copper the metal of choice!

Earlier we used to have Aluminium based heat exchangers which were cheaper but are infamous due to corrosion that leads to leakages and emission of refrigerants in the atmosphere. They are also extremely difficult to repair and demand replacement. This affects the AC’s life cycle.

When we compare this to copper, it is highly conductive, durable, workable and is an important element in the rapidly transforming HVAC(R) market. It is corrosion-resistant and minimizes leakages when compared to aluminum heat exchangers.

When we use 5mm copper tubes in the air conditioner condensers it reduces the carbon dioxide emissions in the long run, making the AC eco-friendlier and, thus, a sustainable choice. It also makes refrigerants and air conditioners more affordable and contributes to India’s commitment to becoming net zero by 2070.

Copper’s unique properties help increase the efficiency and design of HVAC(R) equipment without much increase in price. The increase in AC units, adapting to climate change mitigation and efficiency needs are impacting the market. Copper is touted to continue its support in enabling sustainable and efficient cooling and shaping the future of HVAC(R).
