Automobile and Electric Vehicles

As India embarks on its journey into the Amrit Kaal, new energy vehicles (NEVs), including electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, are gaining significant traction. These initiatives are crucial for addressing pressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development in the country. Under the vision of Amrit Kaal, the government emphasises sustainable transportation through various policy frameworks, including the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, which accelerates the adoption of NEVs.

The need for new energy vehicles arises from several factors: environmental concerns, reliance on fossil fuels, climate change mitigation, technological advancements, and public health benefits. Transitioning to NEVs, particularly EVs, enables India to significantly reduce harmful emissions and create awareness about cleaner transportation options. The Indian automobile industry is responding to this shift by introducing a diverse range of electric and hybrid models, including cars, two-wheelers, and public transportation options. The ongoing development of charging infrastructure across major cities and highways further supports the growth of new energy vehicles in India. Consequently, an increasing number of consumers are embracing EVs as a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transportation.

As India marches toward a sustainable future, the prospects for NEVs appear promising. The government’s ambitious target of achieving 30% electrification of the automotive industry by 2030 is spurring significant investment and innovation in the sector. The domestic manufacturing of NEVs is expected to grow, generating employment opportunities and strengthening the economy. Technological advancements in battery technology, longer driving ranges, and decreasing costs are making energy-efficient vehicles increasingly attractive to Indian consumers.

At the International Copper Association India (ICA India), we create awareness about the use of copper due to its excellent conductivity and durability, which are essential for EV components, including electric motors, wiring harnesses, and connectors. Copper is also vital for charging infrastructure, enabling efficient power transfer in charging cables and connectors. ICA India collaborates with stakeholders to create awareness for favourable policies, support research, and advance new energy vehicles, paving the way for a cleaner future.

What We Do

Through our initiatives, ICA India is dedicated to promoting copper’s critical role in the development and adoption of EVs, ensuring a sustainable transportation landscape for India. We provide technical expertise and research studies, collaborating with state governments to raise awareness about the benefits of EVs and emphasising the importance of copper in EV components and charging infrastructure. Our commitment aligns with India’s goal of developing a cleaner transportation system.

Additionally, our Right to Charge campaign creates awareness about individuals’ and businesses’ rights to access convenient and reliable EV charging infrastructure. By promoting copper-based charging infrastructure, the Right to Charge initiative supports the growth of EVs and contributes to a sustainable and efficient charging ecosystem. The campaign aims to eliminate barriers to charging access, ensuring that EV owners can conveniently charge their vehicles.

ICA India actively raises awareness about the rights of EV owners to access reliable charging facilities, highlighting the importance of copper in EV charging infrastructure. With India projected to need approximately 3.4 million public and private charging points by 2030 to support an estimated 40% share of electric vehicle sales, we are committed to creating an environment that facilitates the widespread adoption of EVs.
