In the urban jungle, an air-conditioner is a necessity. There are many factors to be considered while zeroing in on the perfect cooling unit for your needs. While the tonnage, price and star ratings are common pointers on any check list, the lifespan and long-term performance of your AC depends on two key parameters – the star rating and the choice of metal used in the cooling system.

While all air-conditioners use copper tubes for indoor components, there are alternatives available for outdoor units. When purchasing an AC look for the ones with 100% copper, where all three – indoor unit, outdoor unit and all connecting tubes are copper based.

Here are eight ways how copper can amplify the performance of your air-conditioner.


1. Heat transfer properties

Transfer of heat takes place in the air-conditioning coils; hence, it imperative the metal has good thermal conductivity. Copper has an electrical conductivity and heat transfer co-efficient that is superior to most alloy metals, registered at almost eight times than that of other common metals used for condensing coils.

2. Corrosion resistance

Corrosion can damage the non-copper coils, which negatively affects the heat exchange process and can cause leakages as well, in turn drastically shortening the lifespan of your air-conditioner. Humid, saline air, dust and pollution can further aggravate the process. Copper is far more resistant to deterioration than most alternative alloys used in air-conditioning.

3. Reliability

Copper is considered a semi-precious, nonferrous metal that offers great strength, while being extremely light and malleable. 4. Efficiency

All air-conditioners are graded by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and display an energy efficiency rating basis the number of stars. The higher the number of stars (up to a maximum of 5), the better the energy efficiency of the unit. With standard wear and tear, the efficiency of a unit drops for obvious reasons. Condenser units are usually placed outdoors, prone to dirt and dust accumulation, changing weather conditions, and other vagaries such as debris and nesting birds. With the advantage of being durable, a simple jet of pressurised water can easily clean copper coils, which other alternative alloy condensers may not be able to withstand.

6. Low cost of maintenance

All of the reasons above make copper ACs a far more steelier and cost effective option. While alternative alloy or non-copper ACs require  four services in a year, a copper unit gets the job done in two, halving your standard cost of maintenance and time spent. Similarly, the condenser for a non- copper AC needs to be replaced in about two to three years, whereas a copper AC runs effortlessly for over five to seven years.


7. Environment friendly

Using copper tubes not only enhances operational efficacy, it also reduces harmful emissions from the AC unit. Non-copper based units are prone to leakages every couple of years, with the possibility of releasing refrigerants such as R22 and R410A in the atmosphere, which can have a hazardous impact on the environment. On the other hand, leakages issues in Copper-based units are minimal and thus these units are at a far lesser risk of impact the environment with leakage of harmful refrigerants.

       8.Safe and clean air

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has validated that copper has antimicrobial properties. Copper has the ability to inactivate airborne pathogens in HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) surroundings. The metal’s ability to neutralise various water and air borne bacteria does not deteriorate with usage. Our elders have, however, known this for centuries, ergo the copper based drinking vessels still found in most Indian households.
